• Session 3
    Making Sense of Scripture

In our third session, Coaches will guide preachers through the steps to begin studying the passage of scripture that will be used in a future homily. While some of this will be review, new practices will be introduced regarding the observation, interpretation, and application stages of a Scripture passage. Reflecting on these three stages, preachers will be able to develop the content of their missional homily, and be ready to look at the structure and focus in the next session.

    • Making Sense of Scripture

Exegesis, discovering the meaning of scripture, should be rounded in prayer from start to finish. Then, take notes on and summarize the following:
Observation - What does the passage say?
Interpretation - What does the passage mean?
Application to Me - How does the passage apply to us today?

      Message Simplicity

After making sense of scripture, identify one focussed message. Sticky statements – Refine your focused message into a catchy phrase.

      Message Structure

You might use a different structure but what’s most important is that your homilies inspire, ignite hearts, and move people to respond to the Good News of Jesus.

      John Driscoll’s Reflection Model:
      What: what happened?
So what: why does it matter?
Now what: what can we do about it?
